Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a 15x10-inch jelly roll pan with parchment paper.
  • In a large mixing bowl, sift together all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  • In a separate bowl, beat eggs with vegetable oil, vanilla extract, and buttermilk until smooth.
  • Gradually mix the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients until just combined.
  • Pour the batter into the prepared jelly roll pan and spread evenly.
  • Bake for 12–15 minutes, until a toothpick comes out clean.
  • Prepare a clean kitchen towel by dampening it and sprinkling powdered sugar.
  • Allow the cake to cool for 5 minutes, then invert it onto the prepared towel.
  • Starting from one short end, roll the cake tightly with the towel and let it cool completely.

Frosting and Serving

  • Beat heavy whipping cream until soft peaks form, then gradually add powdered sugar and vanilla extract until stiff peaks form.
  • Unroll the cooled cake, spread an even layer of frosting, and roll it back up.
  • Dust the top with cocoa powder and decorate with chocolate shavings or sprinkles.
  • Chill the Yule Log in the refrigerator for at least an hour before slicing.
