For the Pudding

  • 6 cups stale bread cubed
  • 4 large eggs
  • 2 cups milk whole or skim
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract double if desired
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup sugar adjust to taste
  • ½ cup raisins or currants optional

For the Vanilla Sauce

  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • ½ cup heavy cream or milk for lighter version
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract to match bread pudding flavor

Preparation Steps

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • Combine 6 cups of cubed stale bread with ½ cup of raisins or currants in a mixing bowl.
  • In another bowl, whisk together 4 large eggs, 2 cups of milk, 1 cup of heavy cream, 1 tablespoon of vanilla extract, 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon, ½ teaspoon of salt, and ½ cup of sugar until frothy.
  • Pour the egg mixture over the cubed bread and gently stir to combine, allowing to soak for 15 minutes.
  • Pour the mixture into a greased baking dish and spread evenly.
  • Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes until the center is set and a knife comes out clean.
  • Cool for a few minutes before serving, optionally drizzling with vanilla sauce.

Notes

For best results, allow the bread to soak thoroughly and use stale bread for better texture.
